“I began by asking the dancers questions about their childhoods, and for feelings they have about change,” says De La Cruz of his first work for Hubbard Street 2. Looking at ways that animals in nature flock together during migration, he notes that “when an individual strays from his or her path, it affects everyone, and can slow or divert the ensemble as a whole.”
“I was thinking of this in a human sense,” he adds, “and about the strides we take that can move us forward or hold us back. The decisions we make to fly high, or to stay earthbound, are very personal, and I sought to explore that specifically with both complete and broken unison movement, as a way to honor certain truths about change.”
